Hilltop Urban Farm plants the largest orchard in the City of Pittsburgh

On May 4th, 2019, Hilltop Urban Farm, Plant Five for Life, and The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation planted the largest orchard in the City of Pittsburgh. With the support of 175 volunteers, 193 fruit and nut trees were planted in six hours. The one-acre orchard now boasts apricots, peaches, plums, nectarines, apples, cherries, hazelnuts, chestnuts, and pears.

The orchard also hosts 52 cider trees. This fruit will be used by Threadbare Cider House to make a 500 gallon batch of Hilltop Urban Farm cider annually.

Hilltop Urban Farm has significantly expanded its volunteer partnerships in 2019. An average of 2.5 events per month have been hosted at the farm this season. With 400+ volunteers and climbing, Hilltop Urban Farm is set to double its volunteer engagement rates since 2018.

One Saturday a month Hilltop Urban Farm hosts public volunteer events from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. A public tour is hosted from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. These events are joined by high school students from the New Academy Charter High School. Anyone is welcome to attend!
